Ryan
Saw Saving Private Ryan on DVD today, it’s a terrific movie. I’d see it again. But it’s just a movie. It’s not going to end war or make people do the right thing. It’s not going to make people stop killing other people. Hell, everyone who’s not a sociopath knows that killing is wrong, but it doesn’t stop anyone from shooting total strangers. And war, despite the wonderful speeches we make about peace, is endlessly fascinating to us humans.

The movie already has a terrible burden to bear. It’s not just required to be entertainment, it’s expected to be a history lesson. Like it or not, the present generation learns history from the movies. Now you know and heard where Normandy and what D-day is all about.

Spielberg, the undisputed master at pushing the audience’s buttons, demonstrates amazing restraint. I thought the morphing and the tearful speech near the end was a bit much.

Heroes are not always nobles and self sacrificing. They do not always rise above there own frailty to perform courageous feats. In the movie, the camera does not linger on the details of the carnage, over the soldier who searches in the gore for his own severed arm, over the men trying to stuff their guts back to their open bellies.

This is powerful stuff , made more powerful by it’s documentary style. If the guy who made E.T. can avoid getting mushy, so can you. Now blow your nose and get a grip.
